guitar by the composer Graciela Paraskeva\u00eddis (Buenos Aires, 1940 &#8211; Montevideo, 2017), who in the same decade also includes the guitar in the sextet Alter Duft (1997) and in solos (1998), a duo with G flute.<br \/>The name of this work refers in medical jargon to an intense pain in the cervical vertebrae, as well as a possible reference to the Austrian composer Arnold Sch\u00f6nberg.\u00a0<br \/>It was premiered by the Uruguayan guitarist Eduardo Fern\u00e1ndez in the year of its composition.<br \/>It is an example of a creation born of pain as a source. It could be interpreted as a personal testimony and, knowing other works by the composer (as in this case there is no explicit reference), as a Latin American cultural testimony, linked to the invasion and subjugation of peoples to this day.<\/p><p>What follows is an attempt to analyse some aspects of the music and its notation. The number of repetitions often corresponds to numbers of the Fibonacci series (0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, &#8230;). The inexact repetition keeps the audience&#8217;s attention, striking a balance between novelty and redundancy.<\/p><p>The composer demonstrates a broad knowledge of the guitar&#8217;s own characteristics, achieving idiomatic writing in the best sense of the term, without falling into the clich\u00e9s of the more traditional and facile so-called &#8221; easy guitarism &#8220;.<\/p><p>Among these properties explored are:<\/p><ul><li>the natural resonance of the guitar, taking advantage of the sympathetic vibrations between the strings and the use of vibrato.<\/li><li>equisons (obtaining sounds of the same pitch in different places on the guitar, with the subsequent timbral change of each string and position on the fretboard).<\/li><li>the immense possibilities of timbral variation (B\u00e1rtok pizzicato, tambora, tapping, normal pizzicato, playing at the midpoint of the string, playing alone with the fingernail, playing close to the bridge or fretboard) It is worth mentioning the Bart\u00f3k pizzicato on two fff strings, perhaps the least frequent in music written for guitar of the resources chosen in this work. It involves a bodily gesture that involves the performer considerably. The sound result is more similar to a percussive effect than to a defined pitch.<\/li><li>the rapid extinction of the sound: a characteristic sometimes considered negative in comparison with the possibility of other instruments to maintain the duration of each sound for much longer. Here it is used as a constructive-expressive element, giving value to the sound as a whole (attack\/beginning, middle and extinction\/end).<\/li><\/ul><p>As in other works of hers, in el nervio de arnold there is a manifest use of extremes in various musical parameters:\u00a0<\/p><ul><li>register: from the low end of the E of the sixth open string to the written harmonics and those derived from the pizz. B\u00e1rtok.<\/li><li>duration: from notes played &#8220;as fast as possible&#8221; to the maximum duration of the sound until its natural extinction.<\/li><li>dynamics: from ppp dying out in silence to pizz. B\u00e1rtok fff on two strings.<\/li><\/ul><p>While listening to this piece, there is permanent surprise, non-predictability and contrasts.
